What we believe

A summary

We believe that our one aim in life and death is to glorify God and enjoy him forever, and that God teaches us how to do that in his inspired and infallible Word, given by the Holy Spirit through the prophets and apostles.

We believe that God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and incomparable. One God in three persons, The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all things, the redeemer of His people and the sanctifier of His elect. The only one in whom we trust for the salvation of our souls.

We believe that the heavens and the earth and all that are in them is the work of God and that God directs and governs all that there is so that they fulfil the end for which they were created. This includes humanity of which God made after his own image and to whom God entered into a covenant of life with on the sole condition of the obedience that He was due. When our first parents wilfully sinned against God all humanity fell in them.

We believe that as humans we are fallen in Adam and thus by nature separated and sold into sin, which has corrupted the body and soul and of which is due justice and punishment. This is a terrible state from which we cannot be delivered through our own good works but only by the grace of God

We believe that God has not left the world to perish, but out of His great love He has from all eternity graciously chosen unto Himself a multitude, which cannot be numbered, to deliver them out of sin and to build up again in the world His kingdom. None of this could happen were not for the gracious work of God the Father who sent His only begotten Son into this world working by the Spirit.

We believe that God redeems His people to Himself in Jesus Christ, who is and will ever be the eternal son of God, born of a woman under the law so that he might redeem those who are under its curse. It was Jesus who bore the penalty due to our sins in his own body on the cross and in his own person fulfilled what we owe to the righteousness of God. It is this very Jesus, who now represents us before our Heavenly Father. It is only by putting our trust in the finished work of Jesus; being His perfect life, His atoning death and His resurrection that anyone may be saved.

We believe that God has established His church on earth and given power to it to minister the Word and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord supper. It is by His grace alone that the gospel may be known to the world and thereby the blessing of Christ to all who receive Him so that by faith we might receive the benefits of redemption. And though the sacraments are not necessary for salvation, they are given so that the benefits of redemption may be communicated and strengthen faith.

We believe that Jesus Christ will come again in glory to judge the world in righteousness and usher in the long-awaited blessing for his people for all eternity. This is the blessed hope to which all God’s people look toward.
